Life in Haiti

We wanted to post an update on how things are going here in Haiti!! We have been here for the past two and a half weeks and are making much progress on the school! Last week we completed all the stucco work in all six classrooms (with some help from a few new Haitian friends)!! It looks amazing! We also worked on landscaping the front area of the school. This included bring in gravel, moving large piles of rocks and distributing sand in muddy areas. Many of the children who live near the school jumped in and gave us a hand! It is incredibly uplifting to see how happy these children are to help work on their school.

Next on the agenda… painting some of the walls in the classrooms, sanding and staining the classroom doors, numbering the classrooms and finishing the tile work!! Luckily we have a few volunteers coming in this weekend to help us knock out what we have left!

Aside from the progress we are making at the school, life in Haiti is hard and has taken some getting used to. The heat coupled with the high humidity has made the days very long and draining. We are adapting, slowly (very slowly) but surely.

Some exciting news…. we bought a car today!!! You can just barely call it a car, but it has four wheels and it runs! It is a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder that is beat but we are proud to call it Destined for Grace’s first car! One struggle lately has been transportation so we are excited to now have our own means to get around town!

Haiti Earthquake

Destined for Grace is vary saddened by the recent events in Haiti. Mirebalais, where Destined for Grace is working, was not damaged by the earthquake. Everyone working with Destined for Grace in Haiti is accounted for and not harmed. We ask for your continued prayers and support for Haiti. It is going to take a long time for the country to come back from this devastating disaster. If you would like to make a donation to help Haiti right now we encourage you to donate to the Red Cross, UNICEF, or Direct Relief International.

Destined for Grace is currently planning a relief trip for later this year. We are planning on traveling to Haiti March 27-April 3. The focus of this trip will be bringing food and medical supplies to Mirebalais. With Port-Au-Prince destroyed, surrounding cities will feel the affects in the next few months. They will be unable to get necessary daily resources such as food and water. If you are interested in coming with us please send us an email to destined4grace@gmail. We are also accepting material donations to take on our trip such as rice, beans, pasta, and medical supplies.

Destined for Grace Thrift Store!!

We are proud to announce the opening of our new thrift store. We are located at 5406 Carpinteria Ave. in Carpinteria. We are open Monday - Saturday 12pm - 4pm. Please come visit us!!

Donations are much appreciated! We would be happy to accept clothes, furniture, books and toys. All items can be dropped off during business hours only!! Please do not leave bags at the door!
